Session one: How do we create a literate environment in schools?
This section of the course will examine the importance of speaking and listening activities, story-telling sessions and oral poetry in laying the basis for the successful teaching of English. It will examine the obstacles to literacy in the modern world and suggest the strategies needed to mitigate their effects. It will stress the importance of reading for pleasure and the school libraries and the need to create audiences for our students.


Session two: What is scaffolding?
This section will demonstrate the most effective strategies for teaching writing by scaffolding sessions, modelling and providing templates for young writers. It will demonstrate good practice in fiction, non-fiction and poetry.


Session three: Writing across the curriculum.
This session will examine the opportunities offered in subjects such as History, Geography, RE and PSHE.


Session four: Innovative ways of showcasing children's writing and making them proud of their work. Going beyond marking and classroom displays.
