Financial Benchmarking

Strategic Analysis of School Budget Structure

This course has been specially devised for School Leaders who would like to make a start on the strategic analysis of their schools budget structure. All schools are required to benchmark their financial performance against other schools under the FMSiS standard in order to obtain accreditation.

More importantly, benchmarking will help schools to examine the structure of the school’s finances and challenge whether the finances facilitate the deliver of the education model outlined in the school development plan. The training is limited to very small groups to allow for one-to-one intensive tuition using your own laptops containing your school’s budget data.

In order to obtain the full benefit, some pre-course work will be required. This will involve participants logging on to the school’s benchmarking website to obtain data on their comparator schools. A detailed briefing will be given to make this task as easy as possible and will require no prior knowledge. Participants should expect to devote one and a half hours to this pre-course task.

Outcomes and benefits:

  • Use the school’s benchmarking website to obtain details of the financial structure of a nearest match set of schools
  • Enter participant’s financial data into pre-prepared Excel spreadsheets for evaluation purposes
  • Use processed developed in the programme to interpret, compare and differentiate their school’s performance from the benchmarking cohort
  • Identify management issues for further exploration and resolution with teaching colleagues and Governors, particularly links with the school development plan
